HOW and WHERE EATING IN RIGA

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT IT IS MY OPINION A VERY ITALIAN ONE:
Given this preamble, I have to say the the Latvian Kitchen is very poor and basic. Once at least you should try just as an experience.... It is based mostly on meat. beans, potatoes, beetroots, and different sauces basically with garlic!! (not good for kissing afterwards). Nevertheless, Fish is well cooked but only salmon and pike-perch, the latter is from the rivers of the Country. In any case there are very good restaurant with international kitchen: sometimes too sophisticated but acceptable. Italian Kitchen chapter: PLEASE AVOID DISHES SO CALLED ITALIAN, starting from pasta and pizza. FORGET ABOUT IT!!!
Before giving you my favorite places, I have to point out one thing: in Riga there are very very good interior designers and usually the restaurants are very nice and elegant... some of them I dare say posh.
At last but not least (or the contrary I alway I have a problem with this) here they are my favorite places, sorted by price:

COME DOVE MANGIARE A RIGA

La cucina lettone per un italiano e' piuttosto povera e basica. Potete provarla se volete: a base di carne, fagioli, patate, rape rosse, e salsette varie. Il pesce che fanno discretamente e' il salmone e il luccio, quest'ultimo pescato nei fiumi del Paese. Ci sono pero' buoni ristoranti con cucina internazionale, a volte un po' troppo ricercata, ma comunque accettabile. Capitolo cucina italiana: EVITATE I PIATTI COSIDDETTI ITALIANI a cominciare da pasta e pizza. Forget about it!!!!!
Ci sono ristoranti pseudo italiani che fanno cose buone ma non pizza e pasta.
mentre il cibo non eccelle devo dire che in genere l'ambientazione e' molto curata, stilosa in alcuni casi, rustica-chic: ottimi architetti per interni qui a Riga.

PS: Il servizio diciamo che non e' veloce in generale a parte il Gan Bei, quindi armatevi di santa pazienza.
PS2: il personale e' molto gentile ma a volte dice che ha capito ed invece non e' vero!!!!
